The Cold War was a struggle between the United States and the Soviet Union, also known as the U.S.S.R. It was called the Cold War because there was no actual fighting, it lasted for 40 years. The Cold War started after World War II, when Russia refused to pull troops out of the other countries and nations. Russia thought that they had given up and sacrificed the most during World War II, that they should get something back in return. So they stayed in the countries and nations and didn't pull out. The Cold War lead to the Cuban Missile Crisis, Space Race, Arms Race, and the participation of the United States in the Korean war/conflict.
The Berlin Wall was an actual wall that was built to separate East Berlin and West Berlin. East Berlin was occupied by the U.S.S.R. and West Berlin was occupied by the U.S. military. The Soviet Union set up checkpoints outside West Berlin, not letting anything go in or out. The only way to get food and other materials to West Berlin is to fly it in. The Iron Curtain was an imaginary curtain that separated the truth and false. While the rest of the world thought that the Soviet Union had already pulled out of the nations and countries, Soviet Union was in truth still occupying those nations. It was because of this that the Cold War had started.
The Korean War was between North and South Korea, North Korea was communist and South Korea was leaning towards democracy. The reason that United States had gotten involved in the Korean War was because the United States didn't want communism to spread, the United States wanted communism contained. After learning a lesson in World War II, United States joined the war before communism could take over. The Korean War ended right where it had started, at the 38th Parallel.
The Cuban Missile Crisis was between the Soviet Union, Cuba and the United States. The leader of Cuba, Fidel Castro had just assumed power and was a communist and embraced communism as well as the leader of Russia, Nakita Khrushchev. The CIA started to train a group of people from Cuba who wanted to overthrow Castro, the battle was called the Bay of Pigs. It failed and Kennedy put the blame all on himself. The leader of Russia, Nakita Khrushchev placed missiles in Cuba. These missiles were aimed at all of United States' major cities and military targets. John F. Kennedy didn't want to start World War III so Khrushchev and Kennedy had a secret agreement. Russia would remove their missiles in Cuba if the United States removed our missiles in Turkey. The missiles in Turkey were such a great threat to Russia because they were aimed at Russia's major cites and military targets. After this compromise was proposed there was 13 days of tension before both, Russia and United States agreed. After coming to an agreement the Arms Race and the Space Race began. Another interesting fact about Fidel Castro was that when Fidel Castro was young, he tried to be a left-handed pitcher in the Major Leagues, but they didn't sign him. If they did, United States and Russia might not have had the Cuban Missile Crisis, the closest that the United States have ever came to a nuclear war.
The Space Race is a race between the United States and U.S.S.R., when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I in 1957, United States wanted to catch up with them. So United States created NASA, which stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. On January 31, 1958, United States launched Explorer 1, it was United States' first artificial satellite on Earth. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA
The Arms Race is also a race between the United States and U.S.S.R.
