France had control over French Indochina as they called it. They had gained control in the 1860's. It was really Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. This might seem strange now that European countries had control over Asian areas. But remember that Britain had control over India earlier. This was called colonialism which most people knew wasn't fair. This is the same situation when America was the 13 British Colonies. During 1950-1954 France was leaving Indochina.
The Vietnam War was also known as the Second Indochina War. It was a Cold War conflict. In the end.America withdrew its troops and North Vietnam took over South Vietnam and communist take over of South Vietnam. On April 30th, 1975 the last ten American Marines get pulled out of Vietnam.
